Introducing Hat Madders and Abigail patterns

Introducing Hat Madders and Abigail from Cosplay by McCall’s

Looking for a new project? The two newest Cosplay by McCalls patterns couldn’t be more different, so there’s something to love for lots of different cosplay aesthetics. Hat Madders is an easy-to-make accessory package from Ichigo Black, while Abigail is an intermediate-level pattern for a vest, skirt, and petticoat from Anachronism in Action.

First of all: Hat Madders has a unicorn pattern in it. Yes, we’re excited about that. The lace and floral headpiece is designed with clips to attach to your hair or wig, but you could also easily attach it to a headband blank if you find that more comfortable to wear. And if you’re wondering where to get that adorable horn, it’s actually made from a seashell!

The cage hat is supported by boning and makes a great base for embellishments, from ribbons and flowers to hardware, feathers, or found items. It’s pictured with the bow tie, which has an adjustable elastic band for wearing as shown but can also be repurposed anywhere you need a big dramatic bow embellishment. (Back of a skirt? Pickups on a ball gown? The frilliest bag you’ve ever seen?)

The same package also includes a choker and wrist cuffs with ruffles, trim, and purchased charms. The envelope flap has tips on embellishing and personalizing all the pieces, so consider this a starting point and go wild with the detailing.

Our other pattern for this release is Abigail, which includes an underlined vest, skirt and petticoat. Subtle detailing and construction are where this pattern really shines, especially in the binding at the edges, armholes, and godets. It looks great in a contrast fabric as shown here, or you could also use your main fabric.

Internal structure is essential to give these pieces their fit and polish. The vest and skirt are underlined to give the fabric more body, and the pattern envelope has underlining tips to help ensure a successful result. A bum roll attached to the petticoat fills out the skirt for a little more shape, and horsehair braid helps to support the hem.

  • The Abigail pattern is really cute, but does it have bust darts or princess seams for bust shaping? I can’t quite tell.

    • Hi, no it does not. The only shaping is in the side back and back seams and the godets at the hips. If you click through to the website you can see the line drawing.
