Swallowtail Jackets, Lacy Jumpers, and More! New Pattern Details
If you haven’t seen them yet, the two newest patterns in the Cosplay by McCall’s line, Papillon and Manikin, are now available. These are both intermediate-level patterns with a lot of great details, so we thought we’d give you a closer look at these designs.
First we have Papillon, a pair of gorgeous jackets from Seattle Cosplay. Both versions of the jacket are lined, and would work wonderfully in suiting fabrics, wools, brocades, and crisp silks like dupioni or shantung.
The aristocratic tailcoat has a button closure, buttons on the sleeves, and a contrasting lining. It’s shown in a striped suiting fabric, or try cotton velveteen for a richer look that’s not too tricky to sew.
If your costume calls for more feminine styling, look at the version with a decorative clasp, pleated details, and lace trims on the lapels and wrists. We made this one in dupioni, with a black silk lining. This version is short in back, with more pleating at the back hem and a decorative tab detail.
The two keys to a perfectly tailored jacket are fit and structure. We recommend that you take the time to fit the pattern to your body, and choose interfacings that will support and complement your fabric so the jacket will hold its shape. To help get you started, the pattern envelope includes tips on making a muslin and choosing interfacings as well as picking the right lining fabric for your project.
You might have spotted this outfit among our photos from NYCC, and now you can make it yourself!
Manikin includes a tiered jumper with elasticized back, a high-waisted overskirt, a blouse, and a decorative bow. All the pieces make great basics for costumes or alternative fashion, and are easy to customize with your choice of fabrics and trims.
The overskirt is open in back to reveal the tiered jumper, and has a lace-up ribbon closure. The raised waistband includes boning to make it stand up nicely.
The blouse is a great piece all by itself! It features front pintucks, bust darts for shaping, and a lace-up back detail. It also has lace trim on the collar and cuffs.
The jumper has an elastic back to make it easy to fit and comfortable to wear. For the embellishments we combined several different laces and trims. This is a great opportunity to get creative and make the design your own, and the pattern envelope includes tips on selecting and sewing with trims.
Both patterns are now available online at Cosplay by McCall’s. We hope you enjoy sewing with them, and send us pictures of your creations! We always welcome contributions to our fan gallery, or you can join us in our facebook group. We’d love to hear from you!
